England v The White Line: The Rematch.

August 14th, 2010 by admin

These friendlies mean nothing, the goals even less and there is certainly no real ‘controversy’, but the nature of the one goal England conceded can only conjure up a laugh the very same day Sepp Blatter confirmed FIFA’s curious eye towards goal-line technology.

It certainly looks as though the whole ball never crossed the line entirely, unlike six weeks or so ago.

The gods must not be done throwing down a bit of retribution for ‘66. (Though Stevie G was throwing down himself. Twice.)

Understanding Offside Rules in Soccer

June 22nd, 2010 by admin

offside rule – Usually, soccer rules are easy to understand, even by someone watching the game for the first time in his life. You wrong man, you get punished. You hit him in the box, his team gets a penalty. The ball goes beyond the marked area, it is a throw off. Everything is really basic, with the exception of soccer offside rules. This is a tricky line, and although not in the original cookbook football (as in, was added in the course of time), it is a much needed, so that’s why I will try to explain it a bit.

The offside trap rule only applies to attackers and it is aimed at both positions on the field team to settle. Without an offside rule, an attacker could simply stay in a penalty box, the other team will receive balls and try to score. This would pin down the defenders and they would hardly be able to play anywhere else outside their own penalty area, because their main task would be to mark the peak that is off lazying there.

It is also a known fact that attackers generally do not require the same effort on the field, since they only need to participate in a stage of the game (the offense) , unlike the defenders and midfielders who have to participate in both attack and defense, which include running. So now you know why the football offside rule is, let’s see what it is anyway.

There are two phases of the football offside rule: the offside position and offside trap sanction. If an attacker in an offside position, he will only be penalized if the ball toward him and he has an intention to play it. Otherwise, if he beats the game, he will not be named, despite a clear offside position.

An attacker in an offside position as he is closer to the goal line than the other team the ball and the second last opponent. You’ll often hear people say: “He was in an offside position because he continued to target beyond the last defender. This is actually not a correct statement, since this does not take into account the goalie, so the last defender is actually the second to last, like the offside rule above shows.

So let’s say that team “Yellow” is attacking and “Red” is arguable. The ball is at the feet of midfielder Yellow and the Yellow attacker is a few meters to the goal of the Red Line team than the last red defender. Then the Yellow attacker is in an offside position but the referee will call offside penalty only when the yellow ball to the midfielder, the attacker yellow, while the latter in an offside position.

If you’re new to soccer, the offside rule might need a little getting used to, but you’ll soon be able to spot exactly how and why someone was called offside if you watch a few games. Note that sometimes the position of the attacker and the other team and the defender are so close together that the referee a hard time deciding whether or not offside should have called.

Offside Rule Explained (simply)

May 29th, 2010 by admin

Offside explained

As a football fan, you probably can confirm that one of the toughest rules in football is the offside rule.
I do not know how many times I am asked to explain it. And if you try to explain to other people, I keep coming back for the use of paper and a pencil to visualize.

FIFA explains the offside rule like this:
It is not an offense in itself to be an offside position. A player is in an offside position if:
he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.

So what does this mean in plain English?
The first rule of the FIFA rule says: It’s not wrong in an offside position as long as you are not the ball or the intention to get the ball.
Second line explains the rule itself: If you are between the last opponent (the goalkeeper) and the second last opponent of that team, when the ball is passed to you, you are in an offside position .
The picture shows it much better.

Image example:
Z player passes ball to Player A, but because player A is closer to the goal line of the opponents’ team than the second last opponent, the referee on his whistle for an offside position .
If Player Z passed the ball to player B, then Player A would also be in an offside position but the referee will not blow the whistle because he did not actively participate in the game. And player B is not in an offside position.

How about an offside position with a throw?
This is simple, if you need to throw the ball back in play, you can not offside.
But it can get complicated

If Z player shoots the ball toward the goal and the player A has no influence on the path of the ball, player A is not offside. However, if player A is the line to block the view of the opposing goalie or interferes with the path of the ball, the referee whistled for offside.

I hope I explained the offside rule and did not make it complicated to understand.
If you have any questions about this, just ask.
