; overflow: hidden; color: # 999999; “> STAR-CCM + simulation of a Wilson football

class = “release dateline”>
<p Melville, NY (PRNewswire) 14 July 2010

Although the world’s attention on football (or soccer balls, if you prefer) focused this summer Wilson focuses on innovation in the technical design of ball sports equipment drive with CD-adapco to the state of the art computer simulation the aerodynamics of football to be redefined. During the preparations and all the way to the end of this year’s World Cup, FIFA sent the complaints of many players with uncontrollable speed and / or unpredictable behavior develops, the ball flight officer, and is produced by the principal sponsor of the competition concerned.

The main goal of this alliance is to ensure that Wilson maintains its competitive advantage in the technical design of their products with a focus on ball aerodynamics. “Wilson has long been the importance of aerodynamics in the design of reliable and high performance golf balls, footballs, soccer balls, basketball, baseball realized,” Guenther said Doug Wilson Sporting Goods Co., Vice President of Research and Development. “There are several factors that lead to the choice of CD-adapco STAR-CCM +,” said Guenther. “The ability of STAR-CCM + to solve accurately and efficiently to unsteady flows with boundary layer transition was certainly an important technical factor, but equally important to support and flexibility of CD-adapco is offered. His model and provides dedicated support Power On-Demand is an ideal solution for our needs. “

The complexity of the computer simulation of the flow are well documented in order to analyze footballs. In the past, most Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies are limited to basic models. This was achieved through the simplification of the information involved in the shape of the ball and ultimately reducing the actual flow physics. These simplifications led lead to inaccurate results, forcing ball designers to perform expensive and time of consumption in the wind tunnel test. STAR-CCM + is a product of CD-adapco’s flagship software, enables engineers to accurately and efficiently simulate aerodynamics (and other types of flow) of arbitrary complexity using CFD allows.

STAR-CCM + allows Wilson easily model the real shape of the ball, including details such as panels, seams and stitches. This is imperative because these geometric details, the air flow transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and this is key to accurately predict the air resistance and the stability of the ball. The first phase of the project, Power-On-Demand cluster of computers with Windows HPC Server runs 2008th

Power

-on-demand CD-adapco enables Wilson to take advantage of cloud computing, where performance of the STAR-CCM + simulation. “Cloud computing is a fantastic cost-effective solution for Wilson, and makes our Power-On-Demand offering makes it easy to use STAR-CCM + in the cloud.” Said David L. Vaughn, vice president of worldwide marketing, CD-adapco. Vaughn added: “We are proud to partner with Wilson, not only because of its known history, the quality of the products, but for its innovative approach to the application of technology, also includes continuing to provide the best equipment for the sports world . ”

Wilson and CD-adapco, the intention of the success of this project with studies that go on to other categories of Wilson sports, including soccer balls.

About CD-adapco

CD-adapco is the world’s largest independent CFD focused CAE provider. Our main products are technologically advanced in the simulation packages, STAR-CCM + and STAR-CD.
